Previewing astronomical objects using SIMBAD
SIMBAD is a site provides access to data, images and papers relevant to all types of astronomical objects. You can use it to preview objects to help decide whether you want to oberve them.
Instructions
Enter the Identifier (e.g. M1 or NGC 4321 or Owl Nebula) and click Submit
Various information is returned, including alternative names and the coordinates in various systems.
Look for the Aladin previewer link further down the page. Click this and after a short wait you will get a black and white image taken by another (usually less powerful) telescope.
(You can also click the Aladin Java icon and superimpose images in differing wavebands amongst other things, but this is not so straightforward.)
To return to the SIMBAD home page click the Internet Explorer Back button three times.
