Using the Digitised Sky Survey (DSS) to look at images taken by other telescopes

The DSS site contains digitised images from many different telescopes (including scanned photographic plates in some cases).

Instructions

  1. Click on this link to go to the DSS home page:

  2. http://archive.stsci.edu/cgi-bin/dss_form

  3. Enter the name of the object that you want an image of (e.g. NGC 4321), then click the Get Coordinates button.

  4. Next select:

    • the survey you want to retrieve an image from (e.g. DSS1)

    • the desired image Width and Height (the defaults of 15 arcmins each way are fine)

    • the File type (choose GIF).

  5. Click the Retrieve image button.

  6. After a short wait an image of the chosen object will appear.

  7. To return to the DSS home page click the Internet Explorer Back button once.
